Vintage Stores on Main

Vintage Stores on Main

Vintage Stores on Main

Main Street in Vancouver has an amazing assortment of vintage clothing and antique furniture stores, all within an afternoon stroll.

While the biggest cluster of retro shops starts at Main & 16th, You may want to start with F as in Frank Vintage Clothing at Main & Broadway before heading south.

As a true Vancouver-ite, you will be familiar with the 'awesome' numbering system  used for addresses on Vancouver streets. There are at least 3 Vintage shops worth checking out on Main at 16th including The Main Sellution, Bohemia Gallery, and C'Est La Vie Consignment Boutique which are of course in the 3,200 block.

Heading up to 19th you'll find A Bakers Dozen Antiques, Front and Company at 22nd,  JoJo's Place  and Woo Vintage Clothing between 28th and 30th and finally ReFind just south of 30th. Plenty of other cool shops along the way.

Visit the Vancouver Antique Store Map for a complete map of more Vintage and consignment antique stores in Vancouver.

Deep Cove Brewing and Distilling

Deep Cove Brewing and Distilling

I absolutely love the industrial décor at Deep Cove Brewing and Distilling. Located at 2270 Dollarton Hwy (between Riverside & Forester) in North Vancouver, Deep Cove Brewing has a rustic look that makes an awesome place to drink awesome beer and spirits!

Photo courtesy of The Spirit of BC
Reclaimed wood Table

EVERYTHING is cool inside. You’ll find reclaimed wood used in the steel pipe shelving and long continuous wooden tables that make an extremely social setting.

There’s a wall of barrels behind where the musical acts play and a tasting bar made from a reclaimed brewing tank. The In the hallway to the back there’s a huge set of ominous door that look like they came from the set of King of Thrones. The Doors are actually made from reclaimed wood from a dock in China where they sourced the still. The doors are a lot lighter than they look.
Smaller table made from barrels with glass table top.

The spirit still by the bar is an amazing sight. I’m so glad they placed it where it’s easy to see when enjoying a Long Table Cucumber Gin. It’s like something straight out of 2,000 leagues under the sea. The distillation and rectification columns look like huge copper oboes. Totally steampunk!
Look up – It’s a stylish bicycle (of course!)

NANITCH: Early Photographs of British Columbia from the Langmann Collection
Saturday, April 16 | 7:30pm – Exhibition Reception
Monday, April 18 | 7pm – Gold Nuggets and Silver Salts: The Photographic Legacy of Frederick Dally, Lecture by Joan Schwartz
Thursday, May 12 | 7:30pm – Exhibition Tour with Uno Langmann

NANITCH offers the first look into the Uno Langmann Family Collection of BC Photographs, an important archive of over 18,000, rarely seen photographs recently donated to UBC Library by Vancouver’s Uno and Dianne Langmann and Uno Langmann Ltd. Spanning a sixty-year period from the 1860s to the early 1920s, this groundbreaking exhibition reveals dramatic changes in the province, as well as in how and why photographs were made.

The dynamic display of photographic material shows how the official activities of nineteenth-century working photographers using large-format cameras evolved with the introduction of amateur cameras and mass distribution of promotional photography. The eclectic material includes hand-coloured albumen prints, stereocards, cartes de visite, postcards and glass negatives.

Thanks to funding from the British Columbia History Digitization Program, The city of Vancouver has recently completed a project to digitize over 2100 maps and plans and made them available online for you to use and re-use.

They’ve tried to digitize these maps with enough resolution to support future types of re-use and processing, including optical character recognition and feature extraction. - See more at: Vancouver Map Archives

Railtown, Gastown, Chinatown Story in L.A. Times

Canada's revitalizing Gastown, Railtown and Chinatown

Read the whole Los Angeles Times story at: Hip meets heritage in Vancouver

Tucked alongside the city's forest of gleaming glass towers are three historic neighborhoods that had been overlooked until recently. These neighborhoods, the city's oldest, had fallen into disrepair and were home to those struggling to survive in one of Canada's poorest postal codes.

Gastown is Vancouver's birthplace; Railtown boomed as the warehouse district for the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway, which was completed in 1885; and Chinatown was the hub for many of the 15,000 Asian immigrants who helped construct that nation-building line.

Skateboards and modern art pop up amid the traditional in gentrifying Chinatown

Trendy shops, gastropubs and high-tech firms have re-illuminated Gastown

Railtown on track to becoming a funky 'hood full of craft beers and stellar food

"Railtown is becoming a hip 'hood, and it's changing fast. On a decidedly ungentrified block of Powell Street, a young couple recently opened the funky, vintage Mackenzie Room restaurant, while just down the road is the new, industrial-chic, pan-Latin small-plate Cuchillo."

vintage photos of Vancouver in the 1970s

From Vancity Buzz

POP SNAP Vancouver sure has changed over the past 40 years. After sitting in storage for several decades, photographer POP SNAP uncovered the slides they had put away and started basic lo-res scanning of these Kodachrome pictures.

Kodachrome is quite challenging to scan, as they told us, but as you can see, it was all worth it. POP SNAP’s interest was largely in buildings and structures, which form the basis for most of the photos. Almost all pictures from the set were shot on sunny days.

Vancity Buzz chose just some of the photos from POP SNAP’s Vancouver 1970s sets. To see more, visit their Flickr page.
